Joseph was one of 11 children born to Capt. Joseph Gould and Priscilla (Perkins) Gould. He married 19 Dec 1751, Elizabeth Emerson, daughter of Rev. John Emerson & Elizabeth (Pratt) Emerson, b. 14 Sep 1730 in Topsfield. Joseph commanded a company of minute men at the Lexington Alarm. They had 13 children.
