Jean then married LTC Royce Darwin Smith (U.S. Air Force retired) on Feb 3, 1990 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado. They were married 19 years at the time of Jean's death in 2009.
Jim and Jean had three children between them. First born was Cynthia Suzanne "Cindy" Lakey born in 1947, second born was John Robert Lakey born in 1952, and third born was Jack William Lakey born in 1955.
