Obituary for Dexter Rice from the New Castle, Nebraska Newspaper.
GONE BEYOND
Last Friday, June 4, 1897, a gloom was cast over the home of one of our pioneer families, and a loving father and husband was taken beyond "To that bourne from whence no traveler returns."
Dexter Rice, reverentially spoken of as Father Rice, passed into peaceful slumbers, to join those who have been blest by having been called to the great Master, there to do His will in a field unknown to mortal man.
Father Rice was one of the very few men who were almost perfect. This is not said as a matter of course but it is so well known that it is an axiom with all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was always meek, kind, generous, and was an examplary man, whose long life of honesty, integrity and righteousness, should be a guide to all who knew him.
He knew right, and with right for his guide, his life was made up with that goodness which draws all mankind nearer together. Nearest neighbors, his wife, and children who survive him, have not lived long enough to see him otherwise than calm, consistent and considerate, ever the same kind soul. Few men merit more eulogy than pen can portray, and Father Rice was one of the few. Theses are the sentiments of those who knew him best.
At Belchertown, Mass. he was born in 1828, where he lived and married Miss Aurelia Cook in 1851. Soon after he married, he moved to Northampton, Mass and in 1854 to Floyd County, Iowa, coming to Dixon County in 1866 where he has since resided.
As a result of their union, they have raised five children, as follows: Marcelia, now Mrs. A.S. Palmer; Oscar, who resides in North Dakota; Bina, now Mrs. Griffith of Boydon County, Iowa; Elmer and Alma, twins, the latter, Mrs. Wal Ellyson; and Florence who has found a real father and mother at the Rice home.
Besides being a Mason , Mr. Rice united with the church in early life, and has for a number of years been a member, and deacon of the Newcastle Congregational Church. He was also trustee of the Church for many years.
The funeral services were held Sunday at the residence, also at the church here, and the remains were laid to rest in the Newcastle cemetery.
Many from distant parts of the county came to pay their last respects, and the church's capacity was insufficient to accomodate one-half of those present.
So ends the mortal life of an affectionate father and a loving husband.
