Greensburg Saturday Review, Greensburg, Indiana, March 14, 1891: Mary G Strattan (Chaille) was born Feb 20, 1802, near Winchester, Frederic[sic] county, Va. When not a year old she with her parents started on the Ohio river in a flatboat to Louisville. When they got as far as Redstone the river froze over and they had to stay there until spring; then then came on to Louisville and then to Shelbyville, Ky., and from there to her brother’s, Seth Strattan’s, near Butlerville, all the way on horseback 100 miles when there were no roads laid out but just bypaths. At Brush Creek, Jennings county, Ind., in August 1829, she was married to Moses P. Chaille, Oct 15, 1829, moved to Kentucky in 1831, then back to Brush Creek in 1833. She united with the Buck Creek church in Kentucky when 22 years of age, and united with the Concord church by letter June 16, 1834. She then moved her letter to Brush church, of which she was one of the seven that constituted that church. She remained a member there until the year 1870, when she with her husband and one daughter moved to Sardinia and united with the Mount Pleasant church. Her husband departed this life, Nov. 29 1885, leaving her a widow. She was the mother of seven children, five sons and two daughters [believe it to be 5 daughters and two sons per census records]. Brother and Sister Chaille have completed the pilgrimage of human life; they have crossed the river of death, and have gone beyond the everlasting hills. And while the shadows are falling around the dwellings of loved ones left behind, they have the sweet consolation that in early life they embraced the religion of the Savior and united with the Baptist church, proving themselves faithful. Their works follow them. Funeral services by Elder A. Connelley, at Mt Pleasant Baptist church, Sardinia, Decatur county, Ind., Jan 28, 1891. Contributor: Linda Sawyer (48898151)
