Funeral services for Major William Creigler, who was commander of Maryland’s on Negro National Guard unit for twenty years, will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at a funeral chapel in the 300 block of North Schroeder street. Burial will be in the National Cemetery.
Major Creigler, a hero of World War I who was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with silver star, died Tuesday at his home in the 700 block of Dolphin street. He was sixty-four years old.
He was promoted from the rank of captain to major by Governor O’Conor, becoming the first Negro in Maryland history to hold that rank.
