Henry was born in North Carolina and stated in the US Civil War draft registration that he was 25 and single, living in Hanover, Butler, Ohio on 1 July 1863 when he registered for the US Civil War draft. At the age of 26 he enlisted as a seaman in the US Navy in August, 1864 at Cincinnati, Ohio, and mustered out in 1865. He, and later his widow, received veteran's pensions after the war.
