John Sweany is the third of nine children born to John and Rachel Keziah Runnion Sweany.

John married Catherine Ruddick in 1799. To this union, eleven children were born: a daughter (1800-1830), James M Sweany (1803-1864), Alexander Sweany (1805-1843), Hamilton Sweany (1806-1853), Thomas Sweany (1808-1872), John Sweany III (1810-1847), Lydia Sweany (1812- ), Lewis Sweany (1814-1879), Malinda Sweany (1817-1837), Elizabeth Ann Sweany (1820-1897) and Moses Rummons Sweany (1823-1882).

John and Catherine were constiuent members of the Liberty Baptist Church in Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana which was orgnanized on 29 Jun 1839. Other consituent members were John's siser, Ruth Sweany Bunton along with her husband, Ebenezer Bunton; John and Catherine's son, James M Sweany; Ebenezer and Ruth's son, William Riley Bunton and his wife, Nancy Woodson Bunton; Elizabeth Bunton; and Labon and Damaris Barney Brown, who would, in 1844, become the in-laws of Moses Rummons Sweany, John and Catherine's son.
