Hamilton Sweany was the third of eleven children born to John and Catherine Ruddick Sweany. Born in Lost Creek, Jefferson County, Tennessee, Hamilton and his parents and siblings moved north west through Kentucky and settled in Jackson County, Indiana.
Hamilton married Mary Thompson in 1830. They had 7 children: Achilles Keller Sweany 1831-1865 (Killed during his service in the Civil War), Lewis Andrew Sweany 1833-1875, Adaline S Sweany 1837-1934, Harrison Sweany 1839-1877, Gordon Hamilton Sweany 1842-1926, Alexander Thomas Sweany 1844-1930 and James Hamilton Sweany 1848-1920.
