John Creighton was the fourth child of 9 of Justice Samuel Creighton and his wife Arabella (Gilleland) Creighton of Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio. John was the first child born to his parents in Ohio. John's three elder siblings were all born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania before the family moved west to Ohio in 1841.

John inherited the striking light blue eyes of the Creighton men on his father's side. Most of his other siblings inherited their mother's brown eyes.

John died of Scarlett Fever just two and a half months after his 18th birthday. No antibiotics in 1861 to treat such diseases existed.

John's tombstone, what remains of it, has been remounted on concrete. Having been flush to the ground, after years of deterioration, the tombstone was getting covered over with ground cover. Unfortunately, the broken-off top of the tombstone is now missing and the bottom part is now missing too having been cut-off apparently when remounted onto concrete. This means the bottom information from the stone is now missing too. Fortunately, earlier photos of the tombstone survive.

John's eldest two sibling, who died as children, are buried here in this same cemetery also. However, his parents are both buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay, Ohio.
