Harriet Jane Gentry was born in Stokes Co. NC. She was the daughter of Richard Gentry and Rebecca Lindsey Barnett. Harriet's father was a saddle maker and a major land owner in the area.
On 13 Feb 1826, Harriet married Absalom Baker, a local farmer. Over the next five years several Stokes County families migrated westward to Indiana. By 1830, Absolam and Harriet had settled in Monroe County, along with Absolam's father and siblings and Harriet's brother James. After Harriet's father's death in 1831, Harriet's mother and several of Harriet's siblings brought their families to Monroe County as well.
Harriet and Absalom raised a large family of at least ten children. Harriet died in 1855 at the age of forty-eight.
