Richard H. Baker was the oldest son of Absalom and Harriet Jane [Gentry] Baker. Richard was born 27 Mar 1828 in Stokes Co North Carolina, but by 1830 his entire extended family had traveled cross country to Indiana and settled in Monroe and Green Counties to begin farming.

Richard's parents raised a large family. He had eight brothers and sisters by the time he was sixteen.

On 12 Apr 1846 Richard married. His wife was Elizabeth Wilburn , the daughter of John and Mary Wilburn. Both Richard and Elizabeth were 18 at the time of the marriage. By 1850 Richard and Elizabeth had their own farm adjoining Richard's parents. They had a daughter Harriet, b. 5 Feb 1849, named for Richard's mother. Unfortunately Richard's wife, Elizabeth, died around 1851, and, with a young daughter to raise, Richard remarried.

Richard married Elizabeth's sister, Nancy J. Wilborn, on 8 Jan 1852. Together they had five more children, naming the oldest daughter Elizabeth. Their children were:
Elizabeth Baker 1856 –
Louisa N. Baker 1858 –
Edgar Baker 1859 –
Alzira Baker 1863 –
Perlina M. Baker 1864 –

Sometime after Perlina was born they moved west and were farming in Bethany, Harrison Co, Missouri in 1870. By 1880 they had returned to Van Buren Twp, Monroe, Indiana.

Richard died 10 May 1890 at the age of 62 and was buried in the Greene County Chapel Cemetery.
