John Holmes Taylor was the second son of Henry and Elizabeth (Holmes) Taylor. He was born at the homestead in Fairfield County, Ohio on 20 Feb 1839. He attended the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware in 1857 and later taught two terms of country school. In 1861 he and his brother George came to Crawford County Illinois and they each bought 80 acres of land six miles southwest of Robinson, south of what today is Stoy. In 1862, he returned to Ohio and married Grace Minerva Vernon on 12 March 1862. She was the daughter of Joseph Vernon and Catharine Pickering; she was born 8 Mar 1841 in Fairfield County, Ohio. They immediately returned to the Illinois farm and lived the first season in a log house while John cleared the land which was mostly wooded. They later erected a frame house of one and half stories, three rooms, and a pantry and it remained unpainted for 13 years. In 1892 a grand two story house was built surrounded by a beautiful lawn which included many ornamental shrubs and flowers. The Taylors were gracious hosts for many parties and gatherings of their neighbors. At one time around the oil boom of 1908, John H. Taylor had fifteen producing oil wells and about 400 acres of land in Crawford County.
The Taylors were parents of five children of their own: Orlando Greer, b. 1863; Edwin Vernon, b. 1865; Edith Jane, b. 1869; Edson Holmes, b. 1874; and Catherine Eugenia (Jeane), b. 1881. When they returned from Ohio after their marriage in 1862, they brought with them a young child of age 3 who was orphaned. Catherine "Kit" Beals was the child of Grace's half-sister Amanda (Woods) Beals, and they raised Kit as their own child.
The Taylors were members of the Methodist Church and Mr. Taylor was a steward and class leader in the church.
John H. Taylor died on 13 Mar 1918 at the family farm and Grace died 3 Feb 1922 in Robinson at the home of their daughter Edith Jane (Taylor) Alexander. Both are buried in the Robinson New Cemetery with the large TAYLOR monument marking the family plot on the west side of the main circle.
