Israel Newton was the son of Israel Newton and Rachel Jenkins. This Israel fought in the Civil War for both sides. As a Union soldier he used a pseudonym: John Scott.

Israel had five wives:

1. Minerva Jane Green (1840-1860)

2. Margaret Jones (1841-1869)

3. Nancy Bennett/Burnett (circa 1843-before 1889)

4. Sarah Jane Reed (1853-1893)

5. Frances Elizabeth Huffman (1861-1951)

Israel signed his name with the spelling Israel Newton on an affidavit dated 25 March 1892 at Dallas County, Missouri, an amendment to his application for a federal pension.

His grave marker uses the spelling Isreal.
