Alexander was a farmer and removed to Owego, Tioga County, New York before 1800. In 1810 he was residing at Cambridge, New York again, but before 1820 he went westward again, this time to Sweden, Genesee County, New York. The area was at that time very much a wilderness, but he finally settled at Clarendon, Orlean County, New York, built up a good farm, and became quite prosperous. His brothers, James, Thomas, and Joseph has also settled on adjoining farms. Family tradition claimed that Anna Curtis was a sister of "old General Curtis".
