Samuel McManus was born in Edgefield County, SC on April 29, 1836 to John Thomas McManus and Mary Holley McManus. He was raised by his oldest brother, James Amos McManus and his wife, Elizabeth Timmerman McManus.

Sam McManus was a Confederate Soldier, enlisting Dec 28, 1861 in Columbia, SC in the South Carolina 19th Infantry Regiment, Company C, CSA Army. He enlisted in the same company with many family members. Among them, his brother Thomas McManus and nephews, William T McManus, James Russell Faulkner and W Talbert Faulkner.

Samuel McManus was captured in Atlanta, GA., August 31st, 1864 and was sent to a prison out west.

Samuel McManus never returned home to Edgefield, SC after the Civil War. He married Margaret Ann Graham from Missouri and made a life with her out there and they had several children. Samuel McManus changed his name to Lenoard "Lem" Andres. His Missouri family contacted his wife in South Carolina a few years before Martha Ann Horn McManus died to let her family know that he had not died in the Civil War and that he had made a life in Missouri.
