"MRS. ELIZABETH POPPE IS CLAIMED BY DEATH
Mrs. Elizabeth Poppe, the subject of this sketch, was born May 2, 1854 at Ross Prairie, Texas. She was united in marriage to Mr. Fritz Poppe of Content in 1874. The couple lived at New Bielalu practically the remainder of their lives. Mr. Poppe, the husband, died in 1901. In 1919 Mrs. Poppe moved in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gus Dahse, where she made her home up to the time of her death. She was the mother of nine children, one of the number dying a number of years ago. The surviving children are: Mrs Mary Reichert (sic) of Port Lavaca, Mrs Sophie Hasse of Winters, Mr. Henry Poppe, Mrs. Lizzie Froehlich, Mrs. Alma Dahse, Mrs Helen Paweleck all of the Weimar section, Mrs Minnie Woltersdorf of San Antonio, and Mr. Helmuth Poppe of Halletsville. There also are nineteen grandchilddren and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Poppe died Aug. 16th at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 14 days. She was buried at the New Bielau Cemetery Aug. 17th. Revs. Paul Piepenbrok of Schulenburg and O.A. Meyer, Weimar, Lutheran Ministers officiating in a touching burial service.
Pall bearers for Mrs. Poppe were Messrs. Chas Mueller of Moulton, Aug. Reichert (sic) of Yoakum, Owen Hoegenmeyer of Columbus, Paul Brandes, Adolf Dahse and Albert Koehn of Weimar.
Mrs. Poppe was in a way one of the pioneer citizens of this section. She went through all the trials and vicissitudes of the early settlers of South Texas but she never faltered. She and her husband raised a family of fine children, all of whom lived to be a credit to the mother and father. Throughout her life she proved to be an exceptionally good wife and mother, a neighbor anyone would be proud of, a true and tried friend under all circumstances, and in her passing, even at her advanced age, it is viewed with keenest regret.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her bereaved ones."
