Mary Elizabeth Coffey was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Greer Coffey. On June 10, 1895, she married William Ballard Councill in Boone, North Carolina. They were the parents of five sons, Gordon Stewart, Howard Ford, William Thomas, Stedman Cilley, and Allen Ballard. They also had one daughter, Elizabeth Agnes.
