Served as a Captain in the North Carolina 7th Regiment, wounded at Brandywine, then wintered at Valley Forge with the 7th Regiment in 1778. He later served as Major of the Hertford County Militia. He represented Hertford County in the House of Commons in 1780 and served as the Senator from Hertford County in 1781,83,84.

His daughter Lucinda married Willie Blount, Governor of Tennessee. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Lucinda who were primarily cared for by Mrs. Ann Norfleet Baker following the early death of their mother.
