Lewis Gamler(also Gambler) was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, a son of John and Elizabeth Miller Gamler. He married at Reading on 12 June 1858, Catharine Ann Leinbach of Leesport, Berks County. Lewis and Catharine were the parents of two daughters, Amelia and Catharine.

Lewis enrolled in Company E, 151st Pennsylvania Infantry at Reading on 25 September 1862 for a period of nine months. He was mustered in 28 October 1862. Lewis Gamler was killed in action on 1 July 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. His burial location is unknown, but it may be at Gettysburg National Cemetery.
