James was the son of John and Elizabeth Miller Gamler. He married Rebecca Rickenbach on 14 June 1862. They had two daughters, Annie and Ida. James served two brief enlistments in the Civil War, with the 42nd Pennsylvania and 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry.
