Louise Shuler Smallwood, age 79, of the Mountain Creek Community in Robbinsville, NC, after being diagnosed with cancer in April, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. A native of Graham County, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie F. and Julie Orr Shuler. One of thirteen children, Louise was raised in Robbinsville and was a childhood member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church. She moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1957 where she was employed by Michigan Bell. She met and then married the love of her life, Cotton, on August 8, 1958. They celebrated 50 years of marriage last summer. In 1959, she left Michigan Bell to begin and raise her family in Michigan, where they resided for 33 years and were active members of Calvary Baptist Church. After Cotton retired from GM in 1992, they moved back to Robbinsville and since have been active members of Moutain Creek Baptist Church. Her love for Jesus was always apparent in the way she lived her life. She loved her family; her children and grandchildren are all followers of Jesus Christ because she never gave up on them and always prayed for them. The lessons she taught will never be forgotten, nor will her kind and gentle spirit. She was a wonderful, kind, caring, loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed terribly but never forgotten. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, J.L. "Cotton" Smallwood; her sons, Bruce Allen Smallwood of the home, Jeffery Luke Smallwood and his wife Kathy of Fowlerville, MI; her daughter, Julie Lisa Smallwood Figurski and her husband Shawn of Lampasas, TX; her grandchildren, Alan Thomas, Aric James, and Amy Louise Figurski, all of Lampasas, TX, and Emily Ruth and Jesse Luke Alan Smallwood, both of Fowlerville, MI; her sisters, Ruth Smith and Ruby Lee Sawyer; and her brothers, Delmas Shuler and J.J. Shuler, all of Robbinsville, NC. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Reverend Tom Buchanan will officiate. Burial will follow at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday at the Townson-Smith Chapel. Townson-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
