Mrs. Neis, Active at 76, Dies
Mrs. Gladys Neis, 76, of 925 Woodside, secretary of the 225,000-member National Retired Teachers, died Saturday at Hackley Hospital after a brief illness.
The former Gladys H. Huston was born May 28, 1892, at Montague, and had lived in Muskegon Heights 53 years. She was educated in the Montague Schools, Muskegon County Normal School, Ferris Institute, and Western Michigan University. She was married on Aug 5, 1915, at Kalamazoo to William Neis. She was a teacher for 27 years in county schools here before her retirement in 1949.
Her retirement, however, marked the beginning of an active "second" career with numerous groups of retired school employees. During the past 20 years, she received numerous awards for work with local, state, and national groups of retired teachers.
In 1957, she was elected president of the Michigan Retired Public School Employees Association. She also served the organization for many years as its treasurer. Her election as secretary of the national association came in Washington DC, last August. She was charter member and organizer of the local chapter of the association and had helped organize other chapters in the state. She also worked both in Lansing and Washington as a lobbyist for the organization. Surviving are her husband, William, a retired machinist, at home: a daughter, a son, two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Lytle of Petaluma, Calif., and Mrs. Doris Abbott of Marine City: a brother, Fred Huston of Norton Shores and five grandchildren.
