Civil War: Company D, 7th California Infantry

Joseph Carr was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1860, heading for California. He enlisted as a private at Dutch Flat November 13, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 7th California Infantry, November 16. At enlistment Joseph stated he was 35 years old. Private Carr was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco May 22, 1866 (Orton, 777). Joseph filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in California August 4, 1890, and received application No. 877,087 and certificate No. 712,192. Joseph, a single miner, was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, California, October 10, 1890, and remained at the Sawtelle Home until he requested a discharge April 1, 1892. At admission to the Pacific Branch Joseph stated he was 60 years old. Joseph then went to Yountville where he was admitted to the Veterans' Home of California July 27, 1892, and remained there until his death (VHC Register No. 01161). At admission to the VHC Joseph stated that he was born in 1825. He was buried in the home's cemetery.
