Death of Miss Alice Bitler, Who Fell from a Street Car - How the Accident Happened.

An accident to Miss Alice Bitler, at 17 1/2 and Perkiomen, about 7 o'clock Monday evening, resulted in her death at the Reading Hospital at 9:30 a.m. today.

For 18 years, Miss Bitler had been employed at Kline, Eppihimer & Co.'s department store and for some years was the cashier. She had just returned from a vacation and resumed her duties on Monday morning.

Miss Bitler had her home with her brother, Mr. harry Bitler, who conducts a drug store and resides at 134 North 9th. She left her home about 6:45 p.m. to visit her sister, Mrs. George W. Miller, 1709 Perkiomen. She took with her several packages containing gifts for her nieces which she purchased while away.

She borded a Carsonia car at 9th and Penn in charge of Motorman Julius Schreffler and Conductor Bretz. When 17th was reached she arose and started to step out. A moment later she was seen to fall and land on her head. The accident occurred in front of the house 1726 Perkiomen.

Willing hands quickly ran to her assistance. When picked up she was unconscious and bleeding from mouth and nostrils. She was carried to the residence of her brother-in-law, George W. Miller, and Dr. John M. Bertolet was summoned. He ordered removal to the Reading Hospital. The R. H. ambulance conveyed her to that institution. Here she was found to be suffering with a fracture of the skull. The members of her family were summoned. Several times she opened her eyes but did not recognize any one.

DAUGHTER OF FORMER ASSISTANT POSTMASTER.

Miss Bitler was the daughter of the late Daniel Bitler, who was at one time assistant postmaster of Reading. Her father and mother are dead. She was born November, 1866, and would have been 37 years old on her next birthday anniversary. Miss Bitler was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and a teacher of the Sunday school. Her surviving brothers and sisster are: harry Bitler, the city, and Lieut. Commander R. Oscar Bitler, inspector of ordnance at Newport news; Hannah, wife of Geo. W. Miller, 1709 Perkiomen, and Jennie, wife of William Clouser, of hackensack, N.J. Deceased was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends.

HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED.

On behalf of the conductor, it is claimed that when the car got beyond 17th, Miss Bitler, who was in the front part of the car, arose and nodded him to stop. He pulled the bell. Miss Bitler then stepped down on the foot board and, as the car was about coming to a stop, she sighted with her face turned backwards. She fell and was picked up at the rear end of the car, which did not run more than 12 or 15 feet after she got off.
