Their suggestion: Believe this to be Thomas Newton Appleby and his wife Mary J Griffin. If so he was born 9 Sep 1849 and she in 1854. One son named Rollie Appleby born 1878

Name: Mr Hws Appleby (Thomas N) Appleby]
Marriage Date: 18 Apr 1872
Marriage County: Greene
Spouse Name: Miss Mary Griffin

Mary Griffin had to be his first wife, but still looking at who he married afterward. (I had her middle initial listed as "C" from the 1900 census, by then she had married a man named Holt 3 years.)Tom

I think I have it sorted out. Thomas N. Appleby married Mary C. Griffin on 4/18/1872, then married Mrs. Mary J. Walton on 2/25/1894

Joseph Walton would have been the son of Mary J. and her first husband, Walton.

Mary C. Griffin Appleby married William W. Holt on 7/7/1897

Information provided in e mail to me by Tom a findagrave member.

I've been digging through the newspaper articles looking for more on the Appleby - Walton marriages, trying to learn to whom Mary J. Walton Appleby was first married.
Turns out that Mary J. Walton was married to Joseph Walton, the parents of Joseph Walton (1880 - 4/12/1894)
Joe and Mary J. Walton lived across the street from Thomas & Mary Griffin Appleby.
Joe became jealous over Tom's attraction to Mary J. and both couples divorced in a close time period, then Tom married Mary J Walton.
Joe Walton was so angry and jealous that he swore he would kill Tom Appleby and tried to make good on those threats.
On Oct. 31, 1894, Joe was laying in wait on the porch of a vacant house, when Tom and his son, Rolla Appleby approached in a buggy. Walton fired several shots at the Applebys, before Tom and Rolla were able to dismount the buggy and returned fire, stiking Joe Walton multiple times.
Joe died on Nov 3, 1894 in St. John's Hospital and was buried in Hazelwood Cemetery on Nov. 4, 1894, according to the Springfield Republican.

QUEEN CITY BREVITIES
The remains of Joe Walton who was shot by the Applebys last Wednesday, were interred in Hazelwood cemetery Sunday.
I can not find a listing for Joe Walton in the Hazelwood Cemetery records and perhaps his grave is unmarked?
Ican't find Joe or Mary J. in the census records, they had several children, according to slight mentions in the aricles I've read. They had a son, Clarence Walton, who was 23 at the time of the trial, so that would have made him born abt. 1872, but I have no idea when Joe was actually born.
Tom and Rolla Appleby stood trial for murder, but were acquitted by reason of self-defense.

Some researching I done based on the information provided by Tom:

This would be him with the first wife.

I believe he is buried with second wife Mary J [Unknown] Walton Appleby, and not the first wife Mary C. [Griffin] Appleby Holt It seems that his first wife was the one making the funeral arrangement for him.
