Sudden Death
Evermont Foster Dies From Stroke of Apoplexy
E. Foster, the well known blacksmith of this place, died suddenly last Friday afternoon. He was engaged in shoeing a horse when he was stricken with apoplexy. Some men standing near, seeing he was stricken carried him into the shop and a physician was hastily summoned but death was probably instantaneous.
Evermont Foster was born at York, Aug. 8, 1842, being aged 64 years, 2 months, and 11 days. At the age of 18 years he enlisted as a private in Co. G. 63rd Ill., Vol. and served in the civil war for four years. At the close of the war he returned to York and in 1872 he married to Miss Alzina Clark of that place. They resided in York until 1889 when they moved to Hutsonville. Mr. Foster engaged in the smithing business and later formed a partnership with A. A. Coon. He was the youngest son of a family of nine children of which three sisters survive, being Mrs. R. B. Higgins and Mrs. Carrie Crouch of this place and Mrs. Laura Chitticks of York.
Mr. Foster was a member of both the Masonic and Old Fellows lodges of this place and held each organization in high esteem. Several years since he united with the M.P. church at York. Mont, as he was familiarly called, was of a cheerful disposition, with always a word of pleasant greeting and he will be greatly missed. His death was so sudden it could be scarce be believed and produced a solemnity of thought in the minds of our citizens relative to the uncertainty of life.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. I. Terhune, a large crowd being present to pay their last tribute of respect and esteem. The burial was under the auspices of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges and the interment was made in the cemetery at York. A large concourse of friends from this place went to the cemetery, where many others from York and the surrounding community had assembled.
He is also survived by his widow, who has the sympathy of the entire community in her bereavement.
