J.D. MELTON
Funeral services for Mr. J.D. Melton, 95, of Carthage, were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, from the chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home in Carthage with Jerry Melton and Edward L. Anderson officiating.
Burial, with military honors, was in Smith County Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Melton died Saturday, Aug. 13 at his home after an extended illness. He was married on December 26, 1940, in Tompkinsville, KY, to Loucille (Thrasher) Melton. He was an Army veteran of World War II and an M.P. with the 30th Infantry after going overseas. He was later wounded in Germany. On June 6, 1944, he was in the second wave to land on Omaha Beach in the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
A retired farmer, he was a former member of Moss Church of Christ, a member of Carthage Church of Christ, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Born March 30, 1910, in the Saint John community of Clay County, he was the son of the late Tom and Perlina (Davis) Melton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 7 sisters.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 64 years, include 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Gaye and Scotty Yeaman of Carthage and Carolyn and Gib Hill of Cookeville; 2 sisters, Anna Laura Neely of Livingston and Edna Burchett of Moss; a granddaughter, Misty White of Carthage; a great grandson, Jake Cameron White of Carthage; and several nephews, nieces, and church family.
