Grandma Ella was the daughter of Solomon Greenbury Boyer and Sarah Jane Burns Boyer. She was married to John Clayton Cridlebaugh on July 7, 1901 in Iowa. She and John homesteaded in North Dakota for a while. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse while in North Dakota. They also lived in Graff, Missouri a short time, during which she climbed to the burning roof of their house while she was 9 months pregnant with twins and put out a fire with the help of her oldest son. She wrote poetry and loved the Lord and His holy Word, as well as playing the organ and singing.
