According to Springfield Monthly Meeting Friends (Quaker) Records, she was born January 14, 1837, daughter of Mordecai Ellis & Ruth (Hinshaw) Ellis. These records also list her husband as John. No further record of him in the Friends records. He apparently was never a member of the Friends church. Military records show the John Mills buried beside her is her husband. On Sept 17, 1853 Mary (Ellis) Mills was reported for a marriage contrary to the discipline of the Friends Meeting and disowned. This usually meant the couple was either married by a Justice of the Peace in a civil ceremony or by a minister of another denomination; and/or one of them was not a member of the Friends Church. On Nov 19, 1853 Mary (Ellis) Mills had her membership restored. There is no further record of this couple in the Springfield Monthly Meeting minutes.
