James moved with his parents (William McAllister and Hannnah Patterson) from McKeesport, Pa in 1812 to Armstrong County, Pa. He married 1828 and they became members 1834 of the Seceder Church of Warren. In 1843 moved from Armstrong, Pa to Switzerland, Indianna, where they became memberss of the Allensville Presbyterian Church, and in 1853 to Morrison, Illinois. Became one of the original 22 persons who organized the Presbyterian Church of Union Grove, which is now Morrison.

James obtained 160 acres of land Whiteside County, 8/14/1853 via the 1847 Script warrant Act, which would indicate he served the United States Military, but he was assigned the land by someone who did. Possibly a barter or cash deal.
