ROCKY BOY - Minnie Northwind Vavages, age 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at a Great Falls hospital of natural causes.

Wake will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rocky Boy Catholic Church and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rocky Boy Catholic Church with burial following in the Denny Family Cemetery at Rocky Boy.

She was born April 2, 1922, at Rocky Boy to Steven and Mary (Denny) Fine Bow and was raised in Rocky Boy. She attended an Indian boarding school in Pierre, S.D. For many years she lived in Yakima and Seattle where she worked in hotels, cafes, and as a cook at the Seattle Native American Center. She married Jim Earthboy and later divorced, Pete Northwind and he died in the late 1970s and Leonard Vavages and he died in the early 1980s. She moved back to Rocky Boy in 1987 and then lived in Havre for a year and moved to Great Falls in 1989 where she lived since.

She enjoyed watching golf on TV, bead work, and cooking.

Preceded in death by two sons, John Northwind and Sylvester Northwind and two daughters, Justine Northwind and Mary Northwind.

Survivors include six daughters, Geraldine Rutherford of Fort Belknap, Christina Love of Great Falls, Cheri Northwind of Denver, Darcia Northwind of Missoula, Wanita Vavagas of Great Falls, and Linda Northwind of Seattle; sons, Henry Northwind of Seattle, Steven Northwind and Victor Campos of Great Falls, and Larry Northwind of Wenatchee, Wash.; 27 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
