Antónia Vieira, a resident of California's San Francisco Bay Area, died three weeks before Thanksgiving in 1944. She was 75 years old.

"CABRINHA FAMILY VIEIRA BRANCH (ANTONIA WED TO MR. MANUEL VIEIRA) - She [Antonia] was a housewife, a midwife and a sometimes nurse. Her midwife patients included her nieces and a great number of the prominent women in Hilo. She was well known for her ability to fix sprained joints. Her treatment was to immerse the joint in very hot water. She would massage the injured area with no regard for the pain the patient suffered while it was immersed in the hot water. She would then make a poultice. She did this by taking the white of an egg and beating it. She would then soak fiber for a rope in the egg. She then sprinkled grounded sulphur onto the poultice. She would then apply this poultice to the sprained joint. She would then bind it with cloth as tight as the patient could stand. This formed a cast around the sprain, and within four or five days the sprain was healed. Although she charged a fee for the midwife services she performed, she would charge nothing for fixing the sprains.

She was in her late [mid] seventies when she died.

We know almost nothing about Manuel Vieira. This is how they met and married. She was washing clothes at a stream near her home. He approached her and began speaking to her. This was observed by her brother Manuel who went home and told his mother about the incident. Her mother then told Antonia that she had to marry Manuel Vieira. She objected and did not want to marry him. However, she had to obey her mother and marry him . . ."
