Griffin Garris was the son of John Garris and Alice Melinda (Kinsey) Garris. ** Griffin means Claw in French**

Griffin served in the North Carolina Militia from Lenoir County during the War of 1812 with England. French and Indian Wars. King James War.

Griffin came to South Carolina in search of his childhood sweetheart and cousin Elvira Kinsey whom he found and married about 1816 in Colleton County and their first child was born in 1817. They settled on the left vank of Little Salkehatchie swamp.
(Note: Elvira Kinsey was the daughter of John "Jack" Wesley Kinsey and First Name Unknown (Jones) Kinsey.
John "Jack" Wesley Kinsey and Mrs. John Garris (nee Alice Melinda Kinsey) were brother and sister.)

Colleton was built on his original tract of land comprising about 1000 acres. His Land Deeds and papers are in the possession of
gggrandson Daniel William Garris who is still living on the original Garris-Kinsey property in Colleton County, South

It has been told that Griffin Garris died from pneumonia.

Griffin and Elvira Garris had several children:

John Garris b. August 10, 1819, Colleton Co., SC; d. December 15, 1863, Hospital in Cassville, Georgia from a
Civil War injury. He was a member of Carter's Ford Church. m. (1) Living LYONS; m. (2) NANCY SMITH and left no children.

William A. Garris b. August 19, 1821, Colleton Co., SC, Civil War; d. April 27, 1882, Colleton Co., SC Garris Family Cemetery back of Family Home.
