Hubert Bender was born January 21, 1891, in West Blue Township, Fairmont, Neb., the 13th child of Thomas Jefferson Bender and Mary Jane Bender. He passed away January 28, 1974, at the Veterans Administration Hosptial, Not Springs, S.D.

Mr. Bender graduated from Fairmont high school in 1909, and ran the light and water works in Fairmont until he enlisted in the armed serive in August, 1916, where he served as a sergeant in the 800th Aerial Squadron and served with the squadron in France.

On June 29, 1920, he was married to Bertha Margaret Walker. They moved to Powell, Wyo. He resided in Powell until 1931 when he entered the Veteran's Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. During World War II, he was a master electrician for the Kaiser ship builders in Oakland, Cal. From this time on, his life was quite limited by his service disability and he established residence at Dead Wood, S.D., and spent many years in the Veteran's Hospital at Hot Springs, S.D. He was a charter member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters and brothers, Frank, Dora, Letitia, Elwood,Urbanus and Naomi, all of whom grew up in the Fairmont community.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; sister, Mrs. Alda Kellogg, formerly of Edgemont, S.D., now living with her children; brother, Dwight L. Bender of Powell, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Fairmont on February 2, at the Farmer-Harris Chapel. The pallbearers were Richard Hoarty, Dwaine Thomsen, Gary Kudlacek, Ed Wyman, Tom Boyer and Harold Long. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery.
