Joseph Atwell Suddreth, age 90, of Lenoir died Saturday, January 24, 2009. He was born October 24, 1918 in Caldwell County in the Nelsons Chapel community to the late Pearl Powell and Joseph Suddreth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Tuttle Suddreth; sisters Gladys Whitener, Lorena McGinnis, Verolee Green; and one brother, Rhonda Robbins.
Mr. Suddreth was a Renaissance man in the true meaning of the word. He had an inquisitive, brilliant mind which was evident not only in his career, but also in his many varied talents and interests throughout his life.
Mr. Suddreth was involved in many civic organizations in the community, including 40 years as a volunteer fireman, serving as captain. He had a long and successful career in the furniture industry. He was employed for 36 years at Broyhill Furniture Industries where he was an engineer in the research department until his retirement in 1984. He was a master craftsman in woodworking, creating beautiful musical instruments including violins and mountain dulcimers. He exhibited his dulcimers at many arts and crafts shows in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. His interests in the arts also included photography and textiles. He was a talented gardener and hybridized new varieties of daylilies. He was a gunsmith, a pilot, a golfer, and a musician.
He was a member of Blairs Fork Baptist Church and attended United Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a WWII U. S. Navy Veteran.
He was the patriarch of a large and loving family. Survivors include his six children: Gaynell Suddreth Kuntz and husband Michael, Keith Suddreth and wife Wanda, Gary Suddreth, Judith Suddreth Plucker and husband Loren, Rebecca Suddreth Scharding, Michael Suddreth and wife Donna; fifteen grandchildren: Debbie Mataliano, Lisa Powers, Beth Miles, Brian Suddreth, Mark Suddreth, Andrew Suddreth, Anna Church, Jenny Greene, Suzanne Irwin, Christopher Plucker, Scott Scharding, Melanie Huss, Michael Suddreth, Heather McLawhon, Matthew Suddreth; and 26 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Dorothy Bounds and Norma Cozart and brother Wayne Robbins, along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Grandsons: Brian Suddreth, Mark Suddreth, Andrew Suddreth, Christopher Plucker, Scott Scharding, Michael Suddreth, Matthew Suddreth, and a son-in-law Loren Plucker.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff at Shaire Center and to the nurses at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
