Mary T. Walton was born in Texas in September 1855, and came out west to California around 1857, as a young girl with her parents, Thomas Walton and Amanda Dorsett. Mary may have been named after her paternal grandmother, Mary Polley (Hutchings) Walton (1788-1814).

Mary's parents had first come to San Joaquin County but had settled into Tuolumne County by the mid-1860s. Mary's father and at least two of Mary's younger brothers, William "Billy" Walton (1860-?) and Thomas T. "Tom" Walton (1867-1893), were teamsters, possibly working for the Brunson Stage and Freighter Company. Billy drove a stage out of Big Oak Flat. Apparently, a San Francisco museum has a photograph of him driving a stage. Billy's brother, Tom, lost a leg when his team lunged forward and the iron wheel ran over his leg!

Mary married Edgar Arthur Noland in 1872. Mary must have been a strong woman. After her husband died prematurely of typhoid fever in 1896, three of their sons also died prematurely, and preceded her in death: Leroy "Roy" committed suicide in 1907, Thomas "Walter" drowned in 1910, and Charles "Allie" died of tuberculosis in 1914. She obviously overcame many tragedies during her life.

Mary T. (Walton) Noland died of bronchial pneumonia in 1921 at the age of 66. Her funeral was attended by a large gathering of family and friends. She is buried in the family plot at the Sonora City Cemetery.
