In 1740 the Rev. Aaron Smith was ordained, and served the church through the period of the Great Awakening and into the Revolution. He was suspected of being a Royalist, at one time shots were fired into his house, and after several attempts were made to get him to resign, he was finally dismissed in 1778. For the rest of the war the town was without a minister. (http://www.historicmarlborough.org/High%20Street.pdf)

The bullets fired lodged in a beam, and were extracted and preserved by Mr. Samuel Gibbon. Rev. Smith, becoming less popular, and because of impaired voice resigned the ministry here and in 1778 removed to Wayland where he died three years later. Rev. Aaron Smith was ordained pastor of the Marlborough Church in 1740. He was dismissed ... ostensibly on "account of his infirmity and weakness, which greatly affected his lungs and his voice in particular." The [Rev.] Mr. [Josiah] Bridge of whom Mr. Parkman often speaks was settled in East Sudbury, and had married Mr. Smith's daughter. Mr. Smith lived with them until his death, two years after this, at the age of sixty-seven.
He was rather unpopular as a minister, and supposed to have an inclination to the tory cause. Some one had even gone so far, two years before, as to discharge two loaded guns into his room through the window. His house still stands in Marlborough, and some years ago the present owner extracted the bullets from a beam. (The Diary of Rev. Ebenezer Parkman, of Westborough, Mass.: For the Months of February, March ...)
