NOTE: The correct spelling of his given name is - PAULLIN. It was his mother's maiden name. Some genealogy websites are incorrectly spelling it or using the female name Pauline instead.

Little is known about Paullin. He was born in New Jersey, settled in Warren County, Ohio, where he was married to Sarah _____. Came to Randolph County, Indiana, at an unknown date. He is not listed in the 1850 Randolph County census even though his daughter had died here prior to the census. He had a married daughter and also an unmarried son living in the county in 1850, both of whom were enumerated in the census. Paullin is listed in the 1850 census as living in Ohio with his spouse and remaining daughters. Paullin is mentioned in Tucker's History of Randolph Co., IN, (1882) as among the pioneers who are buried in this cemetery.

One history of Randolph Co., IN, listed a Mr. Seagrave as living south of Farmland at the hamlet known as Georgetown, in an early day. It was near a reference to one of his children. (I have since misplaced these notes).

The parents of Paullin are believed to be Tarver Seagrave and his second wife, Elizabeth Paullin, who were married in Salem, New Jersey, on 29 July 1795.

The brothers of Paullin came first to Henry County, IN, before moving on to Howard Co., IN, settling in the Greentown area of Liberty Twp. One researcher claimed that Paullin followed them and purchased land there. His brothers did purchase land in the county and where successful in their business endeavors. However, a search of early Howard Co., IN, land records proved there was no land purchased in Paullin's name. This does not discredit the story of him following his brothers, or his attempt to make a land claim. The requirements were often difficult to fulfill in new open territories and many failed in the attempt. It is possible Paullin did go to Howard Co., IN, we just don't have proof he did. We do know that he was in Indiana and then returned to Ohio before coming back to Randolph County, IN, where he died.

His daughter, Elizabeth, is buried beside him.

His wife, Sarah, is buried in Little Creek Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana.

The reason Paullin & Sarah are not buried together is that the Baptist congregation moved from south of Losantville to a site a few miles away. The new site is about two miles due east at the Little Creek cemetery. For a time church services alternated between the two sites but gradually the Nettle Creek site was abandoned. A second cemetery was begun at the new site and the Nettle Creek burial ground fell out of use by the early 1890's. When Paullin's wife died she was buried at the new site. Around 1900 the Riverside Cemetery, (still in use), was established north of Losantville and the old Nettle Creek Baptist Cemetery was abandoned. In the 1980's, after several decades of neglect and some vandelism, the grounds were finally cleared of underbrush and the stones reset. The burial ground is currently tended and in good condition. A deep ditch, a steep embankment and a stream separate the grounds from the road. The nearest bridge into the adjoining field is almost 1/4 mile to the north.

Unfortunately when the headstones of Paullin and his daughter where reset they weathered very badly becoming black with moss. (See the photos of before and after). Currently (2010) they cannot be read except by tracing the letters with the finger. Paullin's stone is leaning forward slightly.

CONDITION OF CEMETERY (5-24-2012):
In 2012 the Union Township Trustee changed. Prior to Memorial Day Weekend 2012 the grounds had not been mowed. The grass was waist high. With difficulty I located the grave.
Mr. Lumpkin, the former Trustee had kept the grounds in top condition because his ancestors where buried here and his family helped restore the grounds.
With the change in Township Trustee the grounds have been neglected.

FURTHER UPDATE (5-27-2012):
The grounds had been poorly mowed a few days before Memorial Day. Grass and weeds remained around each stone; only the area between each row of stones had been mowed. Many of the smaller stones where still covered by the surrounding grass. It looked as if a bush-hog mower had been used on the grounds.

(Fall 2012) The grounds are now being properly cared for once again. However, there appears to have been damaged to some stones when the grass was allowed to grow so high and then they attempted to cut it. Several stones had fallen once again.
Many of the tombstones in this cemetery have weathered badly since 1989, several are now illegible.

(Memorial Day 2013) The grass had not been mowed and was very tall. The grounds were not taken care of for most of the summer.
