John Wesley Woodard and Nancy Wiley Gilmore were married on November 20, 1845 in Alabama. They dreamed of making a home on the frontier like others of their family had already done. Their long journey to Texas in a covered wagon probably began in the fall of 1848 with their first child, Franklin Columbus who was just over a year old. Of the eight children born to this union, only two lived to be married. Dr. Franklin Columbus married Margaret Luella Hancock. They are buried in Grapeland City Cemetery. George Marion married Laura A. Kennedy. They are buried in Pilgrim Cemetery in Elkhart, Texas.
