Josephine (Jo) Phillips McBride, a fourth-generation Arizonan of historic pioneer ancestry, passed away in Mesa on April 12, 2006, at the age of 93.

Born June 8, 1912, in Thatcher, she was the fourth child of the three daughters and four sons of David Dee and Eliza Arnette (Nettie) Jones Phillips.

She lived half her life in Thatcher and then many years in Southern California, moving to Mesa in retirement with her husband in 1997 to be near their daughter and other kin. From childhood until the end of her life, Jo was strikingly beautiful, with a captivatingly friendly personality.

She captured the heart of the boy next door, Darvil McBride, when he was 10 and she was only 6.

She held him enthralled for the rest of his 95 years of life. They married Aug. 18, 1933.

Jo graduated from all the Thatcher schools, including the Gila Academy, which is now Eastern Arizona College.

While she preferred the role of splendid mother and supportive companion to her educator, author, politician, entrepreneur husband, along with continual LDS Church, community and neighborly Samaritan service, she willingly entered the work force during the several financially difficult periods in her family's life - always cheerfully and effectively.

Jo and Darvil are survived by all three of their children: Dr. D. David McBride (Linda), Jon R. McBride (DeNell) and Sally Jo McBride Butterfield (Hersch); her beloved baby sister, Arnetta Jean Phillips Dowdle (Glenn); 22 grandchildren; her continually increasing 96 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren; along with unnumbered nephews and nieces. All call her blessed.

Though frail with age, she continued healthy, cheerful and busy right up until her passing.

Despite her continuing love and support for everyone around her, she has missed her sweetheart for the three years they have been apart, always yearning to be reunited.

While the myriad who still adore her are sad to lose her, we know she is where she has longed to be, and we wish her a tearful, eternal. . . God speed.

A viewing was held April 21 at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald in Mesa.

Funeral services were April 22, with a viewing one hour prior at the LDS Chapel, 633 S. Higley Rd. in Mesa.

Interment followed at the city of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St. in Mesa.
