Prominent Durant Businessman Dies April 2

Mr. J.P. Durham, long time citizen of Durant and retired business man, passed away at Durant Hospital Friday, April 2, at 1:10 p.m.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Durant, chartered member of the Rivermont Club in Memphis and also a chartered member of the Men's Garden Club of Durant.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Durant with his pastor Reverend Durrell Makamson and Reverend Johnny Dinas of West Point officiating. John Maxwell of Jackson was the soloist. A prayer was given at the Southern Funeral Home by Rev. Robert Hardin of Hamilton, Alabama brother of Mrs. Charles F. Durham. Interment was in the Mizpah Cemetery with Rev. Smith Whiteside offering the graveside prayer.

He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Mortimer of Winona; one sister, Mrs. W.H. Irby; one brother, Mr. Walter Durham of Durant; four children, Charles P. Durham, Sr., Mrs. Louise Durham of Durant, Mrs. N.W. Kyle, of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Joe W. Hughes of Jackson, and four grandsons, Charles P. Durham III, Weir Kyle, II of Oxford, Ronald Durham of Durant and Joe W. Hughes, II of Jackson.

Active pallbearers were J.R. Brown, Max Murren, and Joe Ferguson, all of Durant; Tom Hughes, Jr., of Greenville; W.R. Patterson, of Jackson' James Arinder, of Winona; Reverend Bob Hardin, of Hamilton, Alabama; and Clovis Hardin, of Grenada.
