Elma was the daughter of Bessie (Simon) Rakestraw and Roy William Rakestraw and the grand-daughter of Abram Reger Simon and Mary Jane (Wine) Simon. Abram was the brother to my great grandfather, Jacob.
Elma had only 1 sibling, her younger sister, Zola, who had died at the age of 10 years while thie family was living in MO.
Elma married Cecil Umpleby on February 14, 1948 @ Eugene, OR. Elma & Cecil had adopted 2 Korean orphans: a daughter, Diane Veron and a son, Dale William. Both children were adopted in 1958. She was also step-mother to Warren Umpleby and grandmother (of 3) at the time of her death.
According to Elma's obit, she had moved to Cottage Grove in 1946 and had worked at the Cottage Grove "Coast to Coast store" for many years. During WW11 she worked as "a machineist at Mare Island . . . building submarines".
At the time of her death, Elma was a member of the Dorena Grange and a member of of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Cecil passed away in 1975.
