From a January 1982 issue of the Chariton Leader:
   "H. G. (Hap) Piper, son of Oscar and Lulu Surritte Piper, was born Sept. 17, 1903 on a farm in Parnell, Kan. He passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines Jan. 15, 1982, following a short illness. He was 78 years and three months of age.
   Hap and family moved to Chariton in 1947 and had farmed in Lucas county. Although retired, he worked part-time for Lucas County Road Maintenance.
   On Feb. 1, 1940 he was united in marriage to Virginia Chaffee. To this union six children were born.
   Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Chariton, Harrell Jr. of San Diego, Calif., Mike and Karen of Des Moines, Rosanna Campbell of DeWitt, Susan and Mike Woodsmall of Olds, Dianne and Randall Gray of Lucas and Doug and Cathy of Lucas; 14 grandchildren; five brothers; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews. His family and friends will mourn his passing.
   Preceding him in death were his parents, Oscar and Lulu Piper and an older sister, Ethel at the age of 18.
   Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 1982, at the Fielding Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronald Stein conducted the services. Cremation took place following the services."
