According to his original Family bible records, Peter was born May 5, 1753 not 1763. His stone is incorrect. He was married in 1773 at he age of 20.

Peter Fine was a Major in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He had the first licensed ferry on the French Broad River, at the old town of Newport, Cocke County, TN, and is considered the founder of the town. He settled on the river opposite the old town of Newport.

The first church in the county, Big Pigeon (Primitive) Baptist Church, organized Dec. 6, 1787 at Upper War Ford. Peter Fine was an early member and his name is found frequently in the minutes. The first appearance is the record of February 28, 1789, when the church met at his home on the French Broad River. May 8, 1790, he was appointed Deacon and ordained as such June 11, 1791. In 1794, he and two others represented the church at the Holston Association. On September 13, 1794, it is recorded his wife, Rebecka Fine, & John Netherton were having an adultrous relationship while Peter was away from home. A committee was appointed to look into the matter and report to the next meeting. At the business session held on October 11, 1794, John was present but Rebecka was absent. John confessed to the sin of adultry. Both he and Rebecka were excommunicated from the church on the next day. It is recorded on Oct.31, 1801, Peter Fine asked to be released from his duties as a Decon; the request was granted. These are but a few of the highlights in which his name appeared in the church record.

In 1797 he was among the first Cocke County Commissioners responsible for locating a site for the county seat and erecting the courthouse. They chose a site about one and one-half miles below the present county seat, at what was known as Fine's Ferry. In 1806 he was a Trustee of Anderson Academy; and in 1812 listed as Commissioner for New Port [sic.]

"Land Grants from TSLA Microfilm, Vol 6, Cocke Co., TN" Peter Fine, Sr., #6280, entered a land grant at the Newport land entry office on July 24, 1816. This was land given in payment for his service in the American Revolution.

His grave is marked by both the original tombstone and a military stone placed by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). They are placed back to back against each other. The military marker is cracked through the death date and appears to have been repaired. The original headstone does not contain any dates, only his name.
