Son of John and Margaret (Woolford) Chiatovich. John was born in Montenegro, Yugoslavia. By 1875 he had moved to Fish Lake Valley in Esmeralda County, Nevada. There he built the Chiatovich ranch and store. When he died in 1907, he left everything to his wife and children. In 1919, Martin conveyed his share of the ranch to his brother, John, and sister, Margaret.
Martin was born at the ranch in Fish Lake Valley. Prior to 1910 he married Leila Ellen "Nellie" Cleary, daughter of John and Katherine (McGroarty) Cleary. Martin and Leila lived their lives in Nevada where he worked as a miner. The early years of his life spent in Esmeralda County.
