"Dr. Andrew Jackson Marberry, age 84, died January 2, 1938, at his home in San Angelo, Texas, of arteriosclerosis and heart disease, after an extended period of illness.
Dr. Marberry was born November 20, 1863, at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the son of Dr. Andrew Jackson Marberry and Mary Evelyn (Robinson) Marberry. Two brothers, now deceased, were also physicians.
Dr. Marberry received his preliminary education in the public schools. His medical education was obtained in the Missouri Medical College (now Washington University), from which he graduated 2 Mar 1881.
Throughout his professional career, he frequently took postgraduate work in New York, Chicago, and St. Louis. After his graduation Dr. Marberry practiced medicine with his father in Missouri. He later lived and practiced in Lonoke and Woodruff Counties, Arkansas. His first practice in Texas was at Ballinger. In 1900 he removed to San Angelo, which was his home for the remainder of his professional life. He was a pioneer surgeon of west Texas, and is given credit for introducing aseptic surgery into that section of the state. He was particularly interested in and made contributions to brain surgery. Dr. Marberry was an unusually keen diagnostician. He was compelled to give up surgical pratice fifteen years ago because of failing eyesight, but had continued to do a limited diagnostic practice at his office until about a year ago. Dr. Marberry was of an inventive turn of mind. In 1880 he received a patent for a cultivator that he had devised. He also invented several surgical instruments, none of which, however, were manufactured.
Dr. Marberry was a member of the State Medical Association and American Medical Association in good standing throughout his professional life, first through Tom Green County Medical Society, and later through the Tom Green County Medical Society. His death marked the passing of the last charter members of the old Tom Green County Medical Society. Records of that organization reveal that he served on the constitution and bylaws committee at its initial meeting, September 28, 1901. Several years later he served as president of the Society. He was elected an honorary member of the State Medical Association in 1933. He was also an honorary member of the American Medical Association. dr. Marberry was a Mason and a Knights Templar.
Dr. Marberry is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Sarah Young of Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of a physician, to whom he was married July 4, 1888. He is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Hazel of San Angelo, and Mrs. H. H. Beck, of Shreveport, Louisiana. "
