The son of Samuel Charles & Susanna (Zimmerman) Sheffler, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklin County and mustered into federal service the same day at Harrisburg as a private with Co. E, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He was wounded at Stephenson's Depot, Virginia, November 16, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865.
After the war, he married Margaret Rebecca Weyant and fathered Clara S. (b. @1868), Ida Margaret (b. @1870), Alphonza T. (b. @1872), Edith A. (b. @1874), George E. (b. @1876), Daniel Royer (b. 02/22/78), Jacob J. (b. 05/10/80), Daisy May (b. 04/27/84), and Goldie (b. 03/18/86 - married Roy Samuel Beard and a Murray). In 1887, he lived in Waynesboro, Franklin County, where he died when timber fell on him.
