Anniversary of "Aunt" Katie Pickle Was Celebrated at Wheatland
OLDEST PERSON IN THE COUNTY

This anniversary recalls to mind one of the longest lived families in the country, Aunt Katie was the oldest child of John and Elizabeth Steffy who came from the state of Virginia to this county in 1822. There were eleven children in all of eight of whom are still alive. Aunt Katie heads the list, having reached the ripe old age of 94 years.
Then comes Aunt Jemima Kettron, 88; Aunt Christena Steffy 87; Uncle John Steffy, at present living in Ill., 85; Aunt Magdalene Dutton, 81; Uncle George Steffy, 83; Uncle Henry B. Steffy, a resident of Kansas, aged 76; and Aunt Sarah Steen aged 73. Their combined ages foot up a grand total of 667 years.There are three dead: Aunt Mary Thompson, Aunt Betsy Steffy and Uncle Joseph
Steffy. They all reached the ripe old age of 75 years each before their death. Aunt Katie is one of the oldest, if not the oldest person in the county..."

Obit of their daughter Sarah Steen states her parents John Steffy and Elizabeth Killinger married in 1799 in Wythe County, Virginia. All of the eleven children were born at the old Virginia homestead in Wythe County.

"Death of An Old Citizen--Our readers will find in our columns a notice of the death of Mr. John Steffy Sr., of this county in the 85th year of his age. Mr. S removed to Knox county in the year 1832. He was the father of eleven children--four boys and seven girls--All of Whom Are Now Living in this County--the oldest aged fifty-six years and the youngest thirty-four. He was the grandfather of twenty-nine grand-child­ren, All Now Residents of This County, and the great-grandfather of one. Mr. Steffy was an industrious and honest man, a good citizen and universally respected and beloved by all who knew him."
