Born in Schleithal, Alsace, France, the son of Jean Martin and Catherine Senn-Hemmerle (Hamlin). He came to the U.S. in 1833 with his parents and siblings. The family settled in Deerfield, Oneida County, NY. He married Elizabeth Dietenbeck at Mohawk Hill, Lewis County, NY on July 18, 1837. In 1850, the family was living in West Turin and 7 children were born to them. By the early 1870's John moved his family to Ft. Scott, Kansas where he lived until his death. After his death, his wife, Elizabeth moved back to Utica, NY and lived with one of her sons' until she died on Feb. 16, 1900.

Obituary:

The remains of the late John Hamlin, who died at the family residence two miles west of this city, June 13, 1888, were interred Friday morning at 9 o'clock, the funeral taking place from the Catholic Church. The remains were attended by a large concourse of the mourning relatives and friends to their last resting place. The cause of his death at the ripe old age of 76 years was a painful accident received while at work. He was engaged in holding posts while another was driving them into the ground. The handle of the sledge broke and the head struck him in the bowels, from the effects of which inflammation set in, causing a painful death.
The deceased was born in Alsace, Germany, September 14, 1811, and came to America in 1833, settling near Utica, N.Y. He was married July 18, 1837. He leaves a wife and seven children; two, Casper and Jacob, who reside near this city; Josephine, who resides in Michigan; Martin, Mary, Maggie and Jennie who reside in Utica, N.Y. He also leaves two sisters, one in Utica and one in Chicago.
