John Minchew was one of seven children of Abraham and Fannie Shackleford Minchew. He came to Ware County, GA with his parents around 1825. Around 1833 he married Rachel James, daughter, daugher of Deacon Ben James. They had 9 children, of which 4 sons were to serve in the Civil War. 3 of these soldiers died during the war.
